about

Slenko & McKeys' first record since their massive "All Brutes, Heave!" -- "Atone Lower" is more viscous than vicious. Francis McKeys sketches skeletal rhythms over a bowed-guitar loop, while C. M. Slenko drags feral guitar lines out of the deep Pennsylvanian night.

Separated into three movements due to size restrictions, but intended to be consumed as it was created -- whole.

"This piece snakes its way across your mind, riding a slow, stable groove the whole time. It has the sound of persistent machinery. It almost feels like it will absorb everything it touches. It is a groaning, shrieking, lumbering giant".
- Issues Magazine

"A deliberate and punishing slow burn of distorted guitars and plodding drums that coalesce to create a landscape of beautiful, shimmering devastation. Highly esteemed!"
- The Modern Folk Music of America

"Over the course of 45 minutes, broken up into three functionally-nameless tracks, Atone Lower blows apart elements of folk, blues rock and noise, reforming it into a post-rock landscape that distorts Americana into a controlled chaos. A lot of this comes from the guitar tones the group plays with, but the duo deserve credit for their smaller-scale ambitions, intentional or not. There’s only so big and blown-out music can sound with just a drum and a guitar.

If there’s a way to write about this stuff without devolving into purple fiction, I haven’t found it. This record made me think of ghost towns, prairie dust, walking miles without seeing another living thing. It made me feel dusty and isolated. It was great."
- Fatter, Older
